Rebooting Router + Modem

Restarting is one of the simplest troubleshooting steps you can take in an attempt to fix whatever isn't working properly. It may seem unnecessary when you're describing a problem to your IT department or a tech support agent and they suggest a restart or reboot right away, but the fact is, restarting does fix a lot of problems.

If you have Winn Telecom Fiber service then you are most likely serviced by what is called an ONT (Optical Network Terminal) and a router. In this instance the ONT is acting as the modem for your service.

The first step is identifying your router and modem (ONT). Our ONT's are manufactured by Calix and will have a label somewhere on them stating so. Router are made by many manufacturers but the most common are Cisco, Netgear and Sonicwall. If you have Winn Telecom DSL service our modems are manufactured by Comtrend and Adtran, these modems can also be modem+router combo's allowing you to only have one piece of equipment to reboot.

Once you have identified the modem and router you are ready to proceed.

As with most things there is a proper order to take when doing a restart of your modem and router.

  1. Unplug both the modem and router
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds
  3. Plug the modem back in
  4. Wait at least 60 seconds
  5. Plug the router back in
  6. Wait at least 2 minutes
  7. Test to see if the problem was resolved
